Wind Power Development and the Greater Prairie-Chickens in Kansas
Submitted by Evie Pless on 09.03.2014
Agriculture and human development have caused a decrease in greater prairie-chicken populations, so there has been concern that proposed wind energy projects in these areas will further threaten the species. This research brief from the National Wind Coordinating Collaborative summarizes a seven year study that began in 2006 and which investigated the impacts of three wind energy developments on male prairie-chicken attendance of leks and female survival. Overall, the wind power plants did not seem to have a strong effect on the Greater Prairie-Chickens. (PDF, 1.2 MB)
