Hydraulic fracturing poses many public health and environmental issues, and this article is intended to help municipalities and planners identify regulatory options to protect their communities. Since municipal regulations against hydraulic fracturing are often opposed by gas developers and some landowners and state legislatures, the article includes case studies showing how these conflicts have played out in court.
