Although land owners who lease their property to gas exploration companies may benefit from the compensation they receive, the process can be difficult to navigate and may even lead to complicated legal circumstances or unwanted impacts to natural resources. Cornell Cooperative Extension Services created this information sheet to help New York landowners understand the process of gas exploration and leasing, prepare them for making decisions about gas leasing, and help them avoid any unexpected legal or natural consequences.
